I was elected Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, two years after first putting my name on the ballot. It's a significant moment for me and my family, and I'm the first Social Democrat to hold the position in the country.
I want to thank my fellow councillors for their support, and the people of Bray, who elected me to represent them in the first place. Neither vote was something I take for granted.
The Cathaoirleach chairs council meetings and represents the council at civic and public events. It's not an executive position, but it carries real responsibility: running meetings fairly, making sure all councillors get a hearing, and representing the council well in public.
I plan to approach it with three things in mind: fairness in how meetings are run, consistent follow-through on the work, and attention to all parts of the county, not just my own area.
I'll be doing this alongside my existing work as a councillor for Bray, and I'll keep people updated on council business as the term goes on.
