On the 5th of June, we mark International Level Crossing Safety Awareness Day, an important opportunity to reinforce public awareness around the safe use of level crossings and the potentially life-threatening consequences of unsafe behaviour.
As part of this national initiative, information sessions are taking place at level crossings across the country, engaging directly with pedestrians, cyclists, and road users. These sessions aim to educate the public on the correct use of crossings and distribute tailored safety leaflets highlighting key risks and responsibilities.
Level crossings remain one of the most critical interfaces between road and rail. While the majority of users engage safely, even a single moment of distraction or a poor decision can have serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences. Already this year, 30 individuals have received fines for dangerous behaviour at level crossings.
Beyond the risk to life, unsafe actions can result in significant damage to crossing infrastructure. In some instances, repair costs can reach up to €200,000, representing a considerable impact on public resources and potentially disrupting rail services for communities and businesses alike.
This awareness campaign underscores the shared responsibility we all have in protecting ourselves and others. Adhering to signage, respecting barrier signals, and exercising patience are simple but essential actions that save lives.
