This month, I met Senator Frances Black, who is a fearless advocate for Palestine. This coincided with my motion to council on the Occupied Territories Bill.
I requested the Chief Executive write a letter to the government on behalf of elected members in Wicklow county council, requesting the Occupied Territories Bill to be enacted.
Speaking in the council chamber, I said:
We all watch the news. We don't live in a bubble. I just want to say at this point, 15 councils have already written and accepted a very similar motion, so there's definitely precedence there. Both Mícheál Martin and Simon Harris both spoke positively about the bill during the election, and I want to ensure that it is not forgotten. So I ask for your support.
The motion was passed. 20 in favour, 1 against, and two abstained.
It's a small drop in the ocean, but we are standing with the 15 other councils that have also successfully presented this motion.
