Across Ireland, communities are dealing with the growing problem of derelict and vacant properties. These are homes and buildings left to fall into disrepair — often for years — becoming eyesores, safety hazards, and a missed opportunity during a time when housing is one of the biggest challenges we face.
Here in County Wicklow, the issue is more visible than the official numbers suggest. According to the Wicklow County Council’s derelict sites register, only two properties are currently listed. But we know — from walking through our towns, villages, and rural areas — that this doesn’t reflect what we’re seeing on the ground.
That’s why we’re asking for your help.
Whether it’s a house that’s been empty for years, a crumbling building on your street, or a once-loved home that’s now falling apart — we want to hear about it.
The goal is simple:
🗺️ Build a clearer, community-sourced picture of the real situation
📢 Bring this list directly to Wicklow County Council
⚖️ Show the gap between the official record and the lived reality
🏡 Push for action that can help tackle vacancy, improve local areas, and potentially bring homes back into use
Derelict sites bring down communities and lower the quality of life for neighbours
At a time of a national housing crisis, every empty home counts
Community voices have the power to highlight what official registers are missing
If you know of a derelict property in your area — even just one — please take a moment to fill out the questionnaire. It could make a real difference.
